... I only seem to post on this blog when I'm either extremely happy or forlorn and melancholic.
These past few days I've been both. It brings back a friend's comment upon viewing our newest music video: "I don't know what to feel".
Two Sundays ago, I took home a new PC as a gift from Dad, one of the countless things he has gotten me in the past two decades. I'm actually typing over it right now. I won't get much into the specs, just believe me when I say it's a high quality machine. I feel ashamed for having it, for not having bought it myself. Of course its speed and capacity dashes these sentiments away as I cruise the web and upload music. The temptation to install games remains.
But the desktop in front of me is not a mere doodad, a toy for me to do with as I wish, a waste of someone else's hard-earned cash. I asked to have one for a reason...to get some work done. A whole lot in fact. There's a whole lot of good to be made out of this baby, and more than most things, I pray that I make good on that task. I look at it as a chance to give back on all that's been given to me.
We never know how blessed we are sometimes, do we?
The things we have and the things we can do, who we are and who we know; isn't it amazing how lucky we can get sometimes? The funny thing is, after we notice it, there's a tendency to forget. That's when it happens. We let the blessings waste away. We destroy something beautiful. The world is full of us, we, the forgetful blessed. It's difficult to wake up sometimes and see all of it as glorious as the day we first encountered it. The lack of traffic, the scrumptious meal, the funny story, the dear somebody. Is this part of man's ability to adapt? To let the fine details of great things fade into blur?
I've misplaced my precious stones countless times. I've seen my distortions in the mirrors of other's eyes: ugly, stupid and selfish. I've stepped on the puppies and kittens of Christmas' past. I've broken bottles of love and friendship; my hands get cut in the futile attempts to mend the glass. There's no sense in crying over spilled milk. Except it's often hard to do what's appropriate when it comes to it.
on the best music video category, please vote King Palisoc for Rico Blanco's "Yugto". He's the director of our latest music video, "Sexy Beast"; he does one hell of a job and is a really great guy! let's help him grab the title!
and if you know any of the college bands, vote as well, or if they're from your alma mater :p
got the good news from Pat and Diego, thanks for the heads up!
Just in case the following refers to you or anyone you know, let's be objective. But let's also do the right thing.
taken from an email forwarded to me
Before June of this year, the Kowloon management refused to pay the minimum wage which was mandated by law. In fact, it did not follow the three most-recent wage hikes, amounting to 82 pesos. As a result, while other workers were already receiving at least P382 a day, the workers of Kowloon only got home P300.
To pressure management into giving them SOMETHING WHICH THE LAW ALREADY MANDATED AS THEIRS yet which management refused to give, the workers wore black ribbons at work in a single day last June. But instead of listening to the workers, management instead reprimanded them, especially the union leaders.
Afterwards, they decided to hold a "picket protest" AFTER their WORK-HOURS and AWAY from any locations that would result in DISRUPTIONS of OPERATIONS. Management then decided to hold negotiations with the union. But secretly, they filed a case of "illegal strike" against the workers at the NLRC (National Labor Relations Commission). So when management did agree to raise their wages to P377 a day, the workers only enjoyed this wage hike for one pay day. Why? Because the other Saturday, all 73 members of the union were fired.
Meanwhile, the contractual workers of Kowloon receive only P250 a day.
All of this is ironic because Kowloon could easily pay for the demands of the workers. After all, the owners of the restaurant never applied for "exemption" from the minimum wage, something the Law affords to businesses that can't afford to pay the minimum wage to its workers without going bankrupt. A lot of local businesses do that, but Kowloon never did. Its either they simply can afford to pay the minimum wage, or the owners of the restaurant have a severe case of amnesia (selective that is).
To illustrate their point, the workers calculated the amount in backwages (the amount of wages which all workers in Kowloon should have received if management had obeyed the three most-recent wage hikes). They then compared it to the sales for a SINGLE product of the restaurant: the siopao. Their calculations showed that the total backwages owed to all the workers was more than equalled by Kowloon sales for siopaos in only 11 days!
If this is greed at its worst, then the NLRC is stupidity exemplified. It ruled in favor of Kowloon management, agreeing that the workers indeed held an "illegal strike". How could that have happened? Could it be possible that someone from NLRC forget that the definition of a "strike" is a stoppage of work? How could there have been a strike, when the workers protested outside of their work hours?
As of my writing, the workers of Kowloon have already established their picket line. To confront these unarmed and hungry workers, management has hired so many security guards that they virtually equal the number of striking workers. Who has heard of a restaurant with 20-30 security guards? The only restaurants that I know that have such a number are those in the movies that house activities of the Mafia. Come to think of it, its appropriate. The Kowloon management's greed and dishonesty in dealing with the workers can only be described as nothing short of "criminal".
And like everything in the Philippines, the Government sides with the thieves, not the theft victims. The Phil. National Police keeps a few cops on the scene at the ready... to disperse the picketline should there be a moment where no outsiders will intervene. Members of the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Phils. have installed a security camera near the picket line, an obvious attempt to harrass students and youths who have regularly visited the picket line in the past few days to show their support to the workers.
This is something which should never be tolerated, and has no place in just society. I urge everyone, my relatives, friends, classmates, schoolmates, casual acquaintances, "online buddies", and anyone else who is reading this, to adopt the cause of the Kowloon workers as if it was their own. Because like in the time of Hitler, the best accomplice of evil are those who keep silent and remain apathetic.
Please participate NOW. Everything is stacked against the workers. Here are a few suggestions:
- Tell everyone you know to boycott Kowloon Restaurant until it agrees to take back the 73 laid-off workers. The best way to hurt greedy people is by denying them our money.
- Repost an online version of their statement all over the internet, write blog entries, post in message boards, and send emails, all regarding this issue.
- Donate money so they can sustain their strike. Its not easy to feed 73 people especially when they all just recently lost their jobs. If you belong to an organization, have your org make it an activity of theirs to raise funds for the strikers.
- Visit the picket line and show your support. As the workers in my previous visits have told me, the morale support they get from us is priceless to them. In a system that stacks everything against them, our support really matters. And aside from that, the constant pressure of youths and students constantly raising hell at the picket line has created negative publicity towards the restaurant, forcing management to promise to hold a dialogue.
- Have your organization, barkada, block, church, family, or whatever, to support the workers.
Thank you and a Good day to you all.
oh, i included the statement:
PAKIUSAP:
BENTA NG KOWLOON HOUSE SA SIOPAO SA ISANG ARAW (7,000 pcs. X P47.00) = P329,000.00 X 11 DAYS = P3,619,000
Paul Ng, Michael Ng: MGA UNION BUSTER!
SAHOD, TRABAHO, AT KARAPATAN – IPAGLABAN!
KONDEHNAHIN ANG SABWATANGNLRC at KOWLOON!

1. Hot dogs Because they are high in nitrates, the Cancer Prevention Coalition advises that children eat no more than 12 hot dogs a mon th. If you can't live without hot dogs, buy those made without sodium nitrate.
2. Processed meats and bacon Also high in the same sodium nitrates found in hot dogs, bacon, and other processed meats raise the risk of heart disease. The saturated fat in bacon also contributes to cancer.
3. Doughnuts Doughnuts are cancer-causing double trouble. First, they are made with white flour, sugar, and hydrogenated oils, then fried at high temperatures. Doughnuts, says Adams , may be the worst food you can possibly eat to raise your risk of cancer.
4. French fries Like doughnuts, French fries are made with hydrogenated oils and then fried at high temperatures. They also contain cancer- causing acryl amides which occur during the frying process. They should be called cancer fries, not French fries, said Adams .
5. Chips, crackers, and cookies All are usually made with white flour and sugar. Even the ones whose labels claim to be free of trans-fats generally contain small amounts of trans-fats. BRAIN DAMAGING HABITS
1. No Breakfast People who do not take breakfast are going to have a lower blood sugar level. This leads to an insufficient supply of nutrients to the brain causing brain degeneration.
2. Overeating It causes hardening of the brain arteries, leading to a decrease in mental power.
3. Smoking It causes multiple brain shrinkage and may lead to Alzheimer disease.
4. High Sugar consumption Too much sugar will interrupt the absorption of proteins and nutrients causing malnutrition and may interfere with brain development.
5. Air Pollution The brain is the largest oxygen consumer in our body. Inhaling polluted air decreases the supply of oxygen to the brain, bringing about a decrease in brain efficiency.
6. Sleep Deprivation Sleep allows our brain to rest. Long term deprivation from sleep will accelerate the death of brain cells. 7. Head covered while sleeping Sleeping with the head covered increases the concentration of carbon dioxide and decrease concentration of oxygen that may lead to brain damaging effects.
8. Working your brain during illness Working hard or studying with sickness may lead to a decrease in effectiveness of the brain as well as damage the brain.
9. Lacking in stimulating thoughts Thinking is the best way to train our brain, lacking in brain stimulation thoughts may cause brain shrinkage.
10. Talking Rarely Intellectual conversations will promote the efficiency of the brain ------------------------------ ------------------------------ ------------------------------- The main causes of liver damage are:
1. Sleeping too late and waking up too late are main cause. 2. Not urinating in the morning. 3. Too much eating. 4. Skipping breakfast. 5. Consuming too much medication. 6. Consuming too much preservatives, additives, food coloring, and artificial sweetener. 7. Consuming unhealthy cooking oil. As much as possible reduce cooking oil use when frying, which includes even the best cooking oils like olive oil. Do not consume fried foods when you are tired, except if the body is very fit. 8. Consuming raw (overly done) foods also add to the burden of liver. Veggies should be eaten raw or cooked 3-5 parts. Fried veggies should be finished in one sitting, do not store.
We should prevent this without necessarily spending more. We just have to adopt a good daily lifestyle and eating habits. Maintaining good eating habits and time condition are very important for our bodies to absorb and get rid of unnecessary chemicals according to 'schedule.' DO TAKE CARE ABOUT YOUR HEALTH.................
AND PASS THIS TO ALL WHOM YOU LOVE & CARE FOR. .....................

"Life throws us these little gifts", I think was Anthony Hopkins' line in the courtroom thriller Fracture. Though he uses it in a wildly different context, it's of the same principle. I think many of us would bare witness to this, even only to give hope to those who seem lost in the confines of their own situations. For sometimes people fail to realize, that even in darkness, once can learn to see. And if one decides to, one can find light in the oddest places.
These past few weeks have been host to the most horrible news. Around every corner there seemed to be another email or text message that let us know of some tragedy or misfortune that has befallen a friend. Some of us may have found ourselves talking to God a little more frequently than we usually do; though I hope we all make habit of it, without the need for His help. To tell you the truth, I could use a little less mishaps in the coming days. But that's hardly up to us now, is it? The weight of our task is of a different nature.
The 90/10 rule: ten percent of everything is the event, ninety percent is what we decide to do about it. The Law of Attraction: your thoughts become things; you mold your life according to your thoughts and feelings. These and other epiphanies we make ourselves or purchase from the bookstore point to one thing that, though I've begun to grasp I'm still trying to learn and master: to not dwell in the darkness. Whether passively or (re)actively, nothing good comes from that, none whatsoever.
We feel the oppression, we are haunted by grief and anger. We fear. These things cloud our spirits, and no good thoughts nor actions will ever be born of such energy. I've been terribly negative most of my life, focused on all that went wrong. And sure enough, subsequently, nothing would go right. It took a lot of good people, whom I'm very grateful for, to help me figure out that my darkness did not help one bit.
I realized a few hours prior that I had made quite a few people smile. Maybe in the past days, week, months, years, or just in these past moments. I am sure you have too. We all have. One thing we fail to see is how big this is, how much it means. We seldom see how much a smile can uplift us, how it's good for our bodies, how it can make everything better. Whether we're wearing it or causing it. Last night we played a song that made smiles for quite a few people, including ourselves in the combo. Some of those smiles were substantially bigger. It was a smile inside, only the tip of the iceberg expressed on the face. It's the smile that never fades, it endures age.
"Be not Afraid". The Bible has many favourite quotes, and this is among them, mentioned about a couple of hundred times. There is great wealth to these words and, for this particular piece, with great boldness, I only touch upon one of its aspects. To fall into fear, shadow and negativity, is to let go of hope, and resign one's self to knowing nothing will ever get better. That there is no room for joy; we shun light with the thought that it does not exist. Give time to those who mourn but recognize that one should not do so for ever. It disgraces a memory, a significance: the significance of you being alive, of people happy that you are, of love. Be not afraid, you make someone smile. You make a difference. Be not afraid, there is love.
Life's little gifts, indeed. In these troubled times, there is all the more reason to smile.
thanks so much to everyone who came to last Friday's show. you made it one amazing night for all of us who worked for it... and for myself personally. i can't even express it.
there were certain people that i specifically wanted to see. to those who were there, you made my night. love.
to those who didn't make it, i know that deep inside, you would've shown up if you could. right? riiight.

We request everyone to please please please pray for Tara, a very young lady who was shot in the head this early morning during a robbery. She is a musician (guitarist for Saffron Speedway) and artist with a ready smile for everyone and warmth about her that is rare.
Today is also her birthday. She is spending it at the hospital in highly critical condition. Please make your birthday wish for her right now and pray that she not only survive this ordeal but also come out as good as she was before this nightmare happened.

Robber shoots lady who refused to give up laptop 08/06/2008 | 08:56 AM
MANILA, Philippines - A 23-year-old woman is now in critical condition after being shot in the head early Wednesday morning after she attempted to wrestle her laptop away from a thief in Cainta, Rizal.
A report by radio dzBB’s Sam Nielsen said the unidentified thief used a .38 caliber pistol to shoot the victim identified by the Cainta police as Tara Santelices of Brookside Subdivision in Cainta town.
Santences’ companion Joyce Mejias, who was riding the Marikina-bound jeepney with the victim at the time of the incident, said the suspect declared a holdup while the jeepney was moving along Felix Ave. in Cainta.
But when the victim tried to wrestle back her bag containing a laptop, the assailant immediately shot her, took some of the passengers' bags and immediately fled the scene. - Johanna Camille Sisante, GMANews.TV

according to joee, she even thinks that the driver might have been in on it also. basta simpleng holdup lang.. i'm not sure whether or not tara fought back or if there was any kind of struggle.. i dont even know kung anong nakuha nila from them. basta the gun went off and si tara yung tinamaan. joee also mentioned that noone in the jeep helped them at all. if anything, the passengers who kept getting off just prolonged the ride to the clinic where the jeepney driver dropped them off and disappeared.
when joee realized that the clinic would not be able to do anything, sinakay sila nung clinic sa cab and when joee was pleading for a nurse to go with them to help her stop Tara's bleeding while in the cab, still noone helped.
according to joee, tara was still conscious and responding to joee while they were in a cab going to the hospital in marikina. when they got to the hospital, the doctors took over. that was the last time joee saw tara awake.
right now, tara's in the ICU of Medical City. the bullet is still lodged in her brain. right now, she's on life support. you can go visit her from 5pm to 7pm everyday. i think the doctors are waiting for her condition to stabilize lang. then tara's family has to decide na talaga whether or not they should let the doctors operate on Tara. if she undergoes surgery, it's a 50-50 chance of making it... so please.. let's keep praying... i think we all want a miracle. so let's pray for one.

To all those who ride taxis in Metro Manila, beware.
The taxi I was riding was nearly jacked on the northbound lane of Edsa, going towards Shaw Blvd...not 25 meters away from two motorcycle police men. Modus operandi was a kid opened the front passenger door, and a guy was waiting for the driver on the other side with what looks like a black jack in his hand. I warned the driver, and he didn't go out; he lurched the car forward.
The would-be jacker ran off.
I found out that his carbarn time was 9pm. It was 8pm, I was his last ride. I guess we knew what the guy was after.
All taxi riders, beware!
And yes, it happened to me only about an hour and a half ago. July 8th, 2008, p.m.
Friends, need help! Our band is shooting our next video, Sexy Beast, this Saturday, July 5! It's gonna be in Alabang in the morning and then @ Paranaque at 1pm. I know it's a bit of a stretch for some of us Q.C. and surrounding area peeps, but we need a few friends for crowd and other scenes. If you have time to spare this weekend, let me know ASAP if you can drop by. Or text Adi if you have her number. I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!
Oh, I'm not sure if I'll be able to celebrate my birthday this month. I guess eto na lang yung tambay time natin hehe. Kitakits!
